About Dr. Saar

Dr. Martin Saar -

Prof. Dr. Martin O. Saar of ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Zurich, Switzerland. Prof. Saar is a founder of TerraCOH Inc. and a co-inventor of the CO2 Plume Geothermal (CPG)™ and serves as the head of TerraCOH's scientific advisory board, while keeping an eye out for project opportunities and potential investors in Europe. His grant-funded CPG™ research projects have explored subsurface performance in the reservoir, mechanical engineering aspects from well to power plant performance, economics modeling, and research on policy implications for geothermal energy in general and CPG™ technology in particular. Prof. Saar obtained his Ph.D. in Earth & Planetary Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2003, later conducting research as the Turner Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Michigan. From 2005 to 2014, he worked as Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, USA, where he remains as adjunct professor, while currently setting up his new Geothermal Energy and Geofluids (GEG) Research Group as endowed (by the Werner Siemens Foundation) and Full Professor at ETH Zürich in Switzerland. Prof. Saar specializes in studying the interactions between fluids, energy, and rocks in the Earth's crust, and carries out numerical modeling studies, laboratory experiments, and fieldwork on this topic. His scientific work spans from fundamental research (e.g. percolation theory, numerical methods, reactive transport simulations, rheology of complex fluids) to applied investigations. His applied research covers most aspects of geothermal energy production including that from Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), and deep and shallow resources. He also uses geophysical fluid dynamics methods to investigate Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), groundwater flow and availability, and volcano hydrology. More information and a list of publications (currently 49) can be gotten from Prof. Saar’s Geothermal Energy and Geofluids (GEG) Group web site at ETH Zürich: www.geg.ethz.ch
